The Imo State Judiciary provides the mechanism for resolution of disputes in Imo State!

The Judiciary arm of the Imo State Government aims at leveraging technology for the dispensation of justice in accordance with the Rule of Law.

Welcome to the Website of the Imo State Judiciary. Over the years, our predecessors have done an amazing job in building a solid foundation for the Imo State Judiciary. We believe that it is our responsibility now, to build on the success of our pioneers and predecessors, to reform the services of the Imo State Judiciary for the benefit of the future generation. This reform requires a paradigm shift and must be underpinned by the use of modern technology, where appropriate. Every change requires collaboration and commitment from all stakeholders, and I would like to thank our colleagues and all those who are supporting our efforts.

Imo State Judiciary at a glance

The Imo State Judiciary is the third arm of the government of Imo State. It was established in 1976, following the creation of Imo State as one of the Federating States of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Imo State Judiciary is comprised of the High Court of Justice of Imo State, the Customary Court of Appeal of Imo State and the Judicial Service Commission of Imo State, and is constitutionally vested with the duty of administering the law and justice in the State. This arm of the Government of Imo State is headed by the Chief Judge of Imo State, who is the head of courts in the State as well as Chairman, Judicial Service Commission of the State. The headquarters of the Imo State Judiciary is the ultra-modern Honourable Justice Chukwudifu Oputa High Court Complex, New Owerri, Imo State.

The High Court and the Customary Court of Appeal of the State are superior courts of record, and pursuant to section of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, as amended, lower courts to writ Magistrates Courts and Customary Courts have been established and are in operation in the State. Sundry specialized and or ad-hoc courts with quasi-judicial powers have equally been established by the State legislature and are in operation.

To enhance access to justice, there are currently, fifteen Judicial Divisions of the High Court, with three Places of Sessions. For the time being, the Customary Court of Appeal, being an appellate court, sits only in Owerri, the State capital. In the same vein, there are twenty-seven Magisterial Districts, with nineteen Subsidiary Places of Sessions and Fouty-seven (47) Customary Courts spread across the twenty-seven Local Government Areas of the State.
